Octant v2: Voting Power From Rewards Versus Wallet Funds

Golem Foundation developed Octant for public goods funding. In v2 rounds, contributed accrued WETH rewards become voting power in full. A wallet ETH or WETH contribution assigns half to voting power and half to a matching buy-in, which is swapped into the round’s configured burn token and burned. Each round can enable either funding path or both.

Updated:

Contribution Size and Voting Power

Voting power is the amount allocated across the projects on a ballot. A project’s final funding combines these direct contributions with any matching subsidy determined by the round.

Accrued Rewards
The contributed WETH amount equals the voting power allocated to projects. This path involves no swap or token burn.
Wallet WETH Or ETH
The contribution, excluding gas, equals twice the allocated voting power. An amount equal to the voting allocation pays the matching buy-in. Native ETH is wrapped into WETH during the contribution transaction.

The budget is a contribution cap. The first contribution depends on the voting power actually assigned to projects, even when the saved budget is larger. Unused wallet funds remain in the wallet, while unused accrued rewards remain unclaimed.

Eligibility and Minimum Contributions

Accrued rewards come from eligible supported token locks. In Golem Foundation’s v2 locking instance , each GLM lock must meet the provider’s minimum and a funded reward period must be active for rewards to accrue. These v2 WETH rewards do not expire and can fund compatible rounds. GLM remaining locked in v1 no longer accrues individual rewards.

The minimum wallet contribution is twice the round’s voting-power minimum. A contribution uses one funding asset; ETH and WETH balances are not combined for payment. The app selects WETH when its balance covers the minimum wallet contribution, otherwise ETH when its balance does. Both paths also require native ETH for gas.

For Epoch 13, Wallet ETH and Wallet WETH require Human Passport verification before contributing. The Accrued rewards path is exempt. Holding or locking GLM does not exempt a contribution made from wallet funds.

The Epoch 13 Passport balance precheck compares combined ETH and WETH balances with the voting-power minimum. Passing this precheck does not establish sufficient funds for payment: the actual wallet contribution requires twice that minimum in one asset, plus native ETH for gas.

Balance Displays and Contribution Commitments

Multiple locks can make the accrued-rewards display misleading for contribution planning. The voting app may show rewards combined across locks, while the contribution transaction draws from one automatically selected lock. The entire displayed balance may therefore be unavailable for that round.

A saved budget does not transfer funds. Once the contribution transaction succeeds, its funding source and contributed amount are fixed for the round. The voting flow cannot increase, reduce or withdraw that contribution. Cancelling the subsequent ballot-signing request does not reverse the successful transaction.

A contribution alone does not submit a vote; the ballot also needs its signature. While voting remains open, signed ballot updates can redistribute the existing voting power across projects without another contribution transaction. These updates are gasless and only the latest ballot counts in the final tally.

Matching Outcomes and Terminated Rounds

Quadratic funding gives weight to support spread across multiple contributors. A project with only one supporter receives no matching. When total matching demand exceeds the available pool, matching subsidies are scaled down proportionally. When demand is lower, part of the pool can remain unused.

The wallet-funded burn does not guarantee a matching amount. Live estimates depend on other voters and demand across the round, so final matching can be lower than projected, including below the amount burned. The contribution split and the matching outcome are separate quantities.

If a round is terminated, participants can reclaim their voting deposit as WETH, including deposits originally funded through native ETH or accrued rewards. Reclaimed funds return to the wallet rather than becoming accrued rewards again. The wallet-funded half swapped into the burn token and burned is not returned.

Funding Source Checklist

  • Check which funding methods the round accepts before relying on rewards or wallet funds.
  • For accrued rewards across multiple locks, confirm the amount available from the selected lock.
  • For wallet funding, allow for an equal voting allocation and matching buy-in in one asset, plus native ETH for gas. Epoch 13 also requires Human Passport verification.
  • Set the source and contribution amount before committing funds; later ballot edits only change project allocations.
